But wait—that’s not all. There’s still another “level” of psychology: organizational psychology. As the name suggests, it deals with things that affect the behavior of people on an organizational level: leadership, culture, diversity dynamics, informal networks, and more. The subject of leadership alone has filled tens of thousands of books and research journals. We know, for example, that being tall, male or extroverted doesn’t automatically make you a good leader and yet a disproportionate number of leaders fit this profile. We also know that leaders who are especially well suited to one setting may not perform as well under a different set of demands. From a “trait” perspective, the only one that seems to hold up is that the person has a reasonable (but not Mensa-level) amount of intelligence. You would hope that a leader cares about his or her people, has a medium to high need for achievement, thinks strategically, communicates persuasively, collaborates with peers, is an agile learner, demonstrates emotional intelligence, and more. But as it turns out, the value of these traits is dependent upon the demands of the situation.
